Your outfit is incomplete without jewellery In fact, it can make or break your look entirely. And with the era of minimalism drawing to a close, Id say dressing up is not the same without jewellery. Wearing jewels is not an optional extra, its a must. The trends of today require jewellery. Here, we look at the top five trends of today and the pieces of jewellery that complete them.
White Hot!
As far as colour goes, right now, the more the better. But many designers have decided to use white as their mainstay. Abu-Sandeep, Rohit Bal and Wendell Rodricks have opted for this route. The serenity and calmness of white is the attracting factor here. White looks like it could be the colour of this season.
Gem it up
Infuse colour into your look with your jewellery. Greens always work well, and emeralds suit every woman. Or then, look for coloured stones such as tourmalines, topazes and garnets. Show off your personality-go for bold, chunky pieces if drama is your core, else, small and subtle is what you should look for.
Free-flowing Femininity
Last year, it was the Greek Goddess look that seemed to rule the ramp. This year, many designers have moved on and yet kept touches of it. It is about layering, asymmetrical lines and drapes for a softer silhouette, whimsical yet oh-so-powerful! Empire cuts are back. As is the A-line skirt that flounces about as you walk. Very 50s. Krishna Mehta, Deepika Gehani, Namarata Joshipura
and Varun Bahls fall collections are full of these skirts. It is what is today known as the resort look...feminine and yet grown-up. Softer fabrics such as chiffons and crepes give this look an all-woman feel.
Gem it up
Delicate is the key here. Soft gold chains with pendants, charm bracelets and small drop earrings. Pearls also work well-for the evening, look for dainty pearl sets with diamonds set in white gold or platinum.
The Indian Diva
This is the most exiting trend for Indian fashion. Not only are Indians embracing their roots but international designers such as Clements Riberio and Mathew Willamson have also gone desi. Ritu Kumars collection includes coarse-knit tops worn with skirts that were adorned
with matt beading traditionally from the Sindh region. Very Manhattan, and yet it had an Indian spirit. Then there was Rannas gota, JJ Valayas kantha and tanchoi as well as Malinis mirror-work and Monisha Jasinghs Benares brocades. It is all about making the Indian spirit work Internationally.
Gem it up
Indians have always loved their jewels. Go all out. Armlets in antique gold and tinkling payals add a true touch of ethnicity. Go for studded balis or jhumkaas on the ears, and look for long necklaces or haars.
The Boho Babe
The gypsy skirt is a must-have for every girl this season. These longer, almost lehenga-style, tiered
skirts have a real festive and carnival feel about them. In fact, designers like Ranna Gill, Malini
Ramani, Ritu Kumar and Tarun Tahiliani are all strong on it. They are feminine yet boho and have
a slightly wild look. They look best in rich, jewel tones and have a slightly ethnic feel. Often made
of crushed material or matka silks they have a raw feel and look best teamed with slim tunics,
sexy halters and embellished T-shirts, all with deep necklines.
Gem it up
An earthy, rustic neckpiece and bangles (lots of them) are a requisite with this look. Payals will enhance the gypsy appearance, as will long earrings. Stay away from chandeliers-too predictable. Instead, look for rounder styles studded with stones. Finish the look off with a cocktail ring in coral or turquoise.
For Men Only
When it comes to men, there are two major trends: the relaxed, causal look and resort-style, Bespoke details, such as pocket detailing and button-through cuffs. The suit is tailored, cut close to the body with emphasis on the waist. The waistcoat too seems to be making a comeback. For eveningwear, the choice is simply the bandhgala. Remember, its about dressing up with casual ease.
Gem it up
Men can wear jewels too...a bandhgala is incomplete without buttons. It adds a touch of nobility. And dont forget those cufflinks and tie-pins. Pendants worn on leather threads and silver rings show that youre a real man with a touch of sensitivity. Its all about balance -and jewellery can balance out any mans look!
