Food Myths : Chew On Them.
To eat or not to eat? some food myths busted
RICE GIVES you a paunch. Chocolate will cause pimples. However misplaced they are, some food myths are really treated like gospel truth. Practising nutritionist and diet consultant and reader in nutrition at SNDT Girls College at Juhu, Jagmeet Madan busts some food myths.

Chocolate causes acne
No, its not true. The causes of acne are many. It could be a hormonal imbalance or any kind of skin infection because of the kind of environment created on the skin. Of course, there are certain foods that can trigger acne, for example, too much of oily food can have an adverse effect on the skin. Of course, consumption of sugar is not good for your skin. Just keep the intake of your favourite chocolate in check and theres nothing to worry A small portion of any dark chocolate in a day is all right.

Dont drink water when you are exercising
On the contrary, its recommended to keep yourself hydrated when you exercise. But dont overdo it or else youll end up with an unfavourable condition. Keep sipping water before, after and during the work out. It helps.

Snacking is bad
First of all, try to understand the difference between hunger (which is physiological) and appetite. Eat when you are really hungry and not just because youve nothing else to do. Look for other options when you know that you are heading to the canteen because of psychological reasons. Of course, the three major meals a day helps in distributing the total amount of food you should take. The idea of fillers is also not bad as long as what you eat is not packed with unhealthy fat. There are healthy options to munch on if you look for. Salads, roasted chana, baked stuff are some of them. Also, keep your dinner the lightest meal of the day.

Dont drink water immediately after your meal
Too much of fluids with a meal means you are delaying the digestive process. Water can interfere with the digestion and may have a diluting effect on digestive juices. Result: you feel bloated. But then, sipping water between meals can actually lubricate food and help you digest. In you want to drink more, wait for at least 20 minutes.

Milk consumption can lead to weight gain
Totally untrue. Milk is a complete food and with the cases of osteoporosis rising everyday the consumption of milk becomes imperative. You should have milk and milk products everyday. Have 3-4 servings of low-fat milk or curd made from it. Not less than that, if not advised otherwise by your doctor.

Non-vegetarian food is healthier than vegetarian food
Again its a total misconception. The people who eat non-vegetarian may have good quantities of protein but there are some essential nutrients (like fibres, vitamins of minerals) you get from a vegetarian diet. The idea is to mix both-veg and healthy non-veg options. If not, take care to include enough protein in your vegetarian food.

Dont mix roti and rice
People think rice is fattening, which is not true. The calorific value of roti, rice and two slices of bread is almost the same. So youve to-exercise and burn those calories-the best way to deal with weight gain. Also, mixing the two (them (roti and rice) is perfecly okay and does not to health problems whatsoever. Make sure the rice is boiled. Biryani or pulao may tempt you but as they, "Control is the key." Especially when its you body which is at stake.

Dont eat fruits at night
No its not true. You should have fruits and other things balance. But dont have them together. Wait for at least 45 minutes to an hour before you have any fruit after the meal. Starchy fruits or coloured fruits are the ones that are recommended.
