Whats in an Artists Mind?
Picasso said, "art is a lie that makes us realise the truth." the mystery of a painting lies beneath the mystery of the artists mind.
Art, they say, is an imitation of life. And life is all about the mystical, the unforeseen. Enter the world of abstract art that is baseless, formless, idealess, yet is replete with meaning. A picture may paint a thousand words, but where abstract art is concerned, it could also put forth a barrage of questions and interpretations. But thats where its beauty lies... in its mystique. Symbolism, surrealism, mythology and the subconscious-thats what abstract art comprises of. And besides this of course perceptions, different perceptions, different opinions, all on one work of art.

But does an abstract artist have a pre-conceived notion of what he/she wants to portray? "Abstract art is an experience, the expression of a feeling rather than an actual form of art. Its portrayal of ones emotions through strokes of colour, a moment in time embodied on canvas," says artist Bose Krishnamachari, who believes that the inspiration to put thoughts on canvas is on the spur of the moment. "I see an object and if it appeals to me, some form of it is depicted in my work," says Bose.

Artist Sheetal Gattani corroborates, "In essence, abstract art is formless, there is no beginning, no middle and no end. Its a pure experience. I leave all conditioning behind and paint what I feel. Abstract art goes beyond art, its the experience of the moment," feels Sheetal.

Artist Suraj Rai, however, feels that the subconscious plays a primary role in the creation of abstract art. "On one level, it is abstract, with no apparent meaning. However, on a deeper level, this form of art is replete with symbols. These symbols are a result of our past experiences. For instance, a part of the artists immediate environment subconsciously comes into play when working on abstract landscapes," explains Rai, adding that mythological symbols often make their way into abstract art, "since its ingrained in our subconscious." But what seems abstract to the naked eye actually possesses different meanings for different people.

"Certain common symbols can be perceived by others, and they read into these symbols. But its a vicious circle, since everybodys perceptions are influenced by their past experiences. So there are always different reactions to one work of abstract art, with layers and sub-layers of meaning. Abstract imagery is more symbolic than realistic," concludes Rai.
