A home theatre can make give you the experience of a movie theatre while sitting at home.
Owning a home theatre system is like making a lifestyle statement. However most people's concept of a home theatre system is limited to those available as an all-in-one solution sold by most consumer electronics companies. Little do we realise installing a home theatre can be a daunting process.

Equip yourself
There's lot more to installing the home entertainment system than meets the eye. The choice of audio and video equipment, the correct installation of the equipment, the position of the speakers and seating play a vital role in obtaining the optimum performance of the equipment available in your prescribed budget.

In case you are looking at installing a home theatre system in a house that you are intending to build or are currently building, it would be wise to give careful thought to the system and wiring requirements before the work on the interiors commences.

It is advisable to get the concealed wiring done before getting the plastering and painting. Pulling wires, especially for the rear speakers proves to be quite a task later. On the other hand, exposed wiring will have a detrimental effect on the ambience of the room. Though many audiophiles feel that their sonic output is still not comparable to those of the top-of-the-line loud- speaker systems, some companies are now marketing home theatre systems with wireless speakers.

Research your boom box
It is imperative that you do some research on the options available and define your requirements in terms of technology and budget. In most cases, you will also need to make aesthetic considerations to avoid any clash of the home theatre system with the decor of the room. Bear in mind, a genuine home theatre system (without the display unit) could cost upwards of Rs 1.25 lakh. Our definition of a genuine home theatre system includes a system designed for an optimum audio-visual experience.

Once you arrive at a budget, it's important that you balance the investment to obtain the optimum performance of the system. It would not be very sensible to connect an extremely expensive premium amplifier to a low-end source unit (CD or DVD player) or even a medium range loudspeaker set. The sound and picture quality you will pet from the system will only be as good as the weakest link in the chain.

While you are structuring the budget, you should allocate the maximum amount to the speakers. Among all the components of the home theatre system, the technology of the speakers is least likely to evolve very soon. The second largest amount should be allocated to the processors as the technology in this case continues to progress every year or two. After these components are identified, your third largest investment should be the source unit (DVD player). Audiophiles ask people to pay heed to even the wiring of the system. It is recommended that you allocate an expense of 15-20 per cent of the total value of the home theatre system for cables.

Max your output
There are several limitations that govern the design and performance of the home theatre system. The size and furniture of the living room or bedroom adversely affect the output of any system. Sofas and beds often compromise the quality of sound output. If you want the best possible output of your chosen system, build the home theatre in a separate room. The positioning of the display unit, seating arrangement and even speaker angles impact the performance.
