Ayurveda and Kerala Massage
Since ancient times ayurveda massage is used to keep the body energised and refereshed. Today the power of massage is used to maintain holistic health.
Ayurveda, the ancient system of holistic healing which has been used in India for over 5000 years, aims to achieve health by bringing the individual in to harmony with nature. The object of Ayurveda is to alleviate suffering and to preserve the health of the healthy and heal the diseases of the diseased. According to Ayurveda, every thing in the material creation is composed of combinations of the five elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. All matter is composed of the five elements which are the building blocks of existence, but the living matter has been divided in to three which rare named as Tridoshas, which have an important role in Ayurveda. These tridoshas named as Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, arise out of the five elements and can be regarded as the three primary energetic principles which regulate every physiological and psychological process in the living organism. A harmonious state of the three doshas creates balance in the physiology- in modern terms, homeostasis-and this is the foundation of good health. Any imbalance in the tridosha manifests in a wide variety of signs and symptoms.

What is health?
According to Ayurveda, a person having the equilibrium of doshas (vata, pitta and kapha, which are responsible for the functioning and mal-functioning of different organs of the body) agnis (enzymes responsible for the digestion and metabolism), dhatus (tissue elements constituting the structure of the individuals body) and malas (waste products which are eliminated from the body) and happiness of the soul, senses and the mind, is to be treated as "healthy".

As a physiological process, the body of an individual undergoes several changes during different stages of life, during the different parts of the day and night and during different seasons. The body needs to have an inbuilt power of resistance to overcome these changes. But, if these changes are significant, then even a healthy person suffers from diseases. To promote this inbuilt power of resistance in the body, to overcome these changes, and to correct a malady if it has already got manifested, Ayurveda suggests several therapeutic measures in the form of drugs, diets, regimens, and specialized therapies.

In ancient days, life was simple and close to nature. But today's modern age is the age of greed and competition. Life has become more strenuous. There is stress on the nerves every moment. Here comes the importance of massage. During this modern age of stress and strain massage is a must. The speed of everything has increased and there are unnatural shocks shaking the nervous system every moment. The popularity of massage shows an inner urge in people especially in the western world to find natural methods of relaxing and vitalizing the human organism. Massage is the most natural and powerful method of relaxing and at the same time rejuvenating the body. According to Ayurveda, a person, with a view to preserving and promoting positive health and preventing diseases, should use massage therapy every day. It has the following specific attributes:

It prevents and corrects ageing process. It helps a person to overcome fatigue because of routine hard work in life. It prevents and corrects disorders caused by the affliction of the nervous system. It helps in the nourishment of the body. It promotes longevity. It helps the individual to get good sleep. It promotes sturdiness of the individual. It provides resistance against disease and disharmony and offers resistance to injuries and power to recover quickly. Massage subsides ailments caused by mucous and wind (kapha and vata) and also provides strength to the skin and improves the colour and texture of the skin

Thus Ayurveda massage is highly praised and much emphasis is placed on the use of oils in massage. The benefit of massage is described in Ayurveda in the way of different metaphoric illustrations. A leather bag gets worn out quickly if used regularly, but if it is greased in time, then it will last longer. The axe of a wheel in vehicle gets quickly worn out unless it is timely and appropriately greased. The body is also compared to a tree. If the root of the tree is given water regularly, then it lives for a long time. Similarly on the above analogy, if the body of an individual is oleated properly through massage, then he lives for a long time without any decay of disease.
